Blast Claims Three Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Procedure in the Verona Area
Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Event Timeline
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.
The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the building left as a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member caused the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
