Chicago's MLB Team Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial $34 Million Deal.
In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract with the power-hitting player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The contract grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.
The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his approval and makes him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
