Donald Trump Raises Duties on Canada's Imports In Response to Ronald Reagan Commercial

US President Trump has announced he is hiking duties on items brought in from Canadian sources after the region of the Ontario government broadcast an anti-import tax advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan.

In a Truth Social message on the weekend, Donald Trump called the commercial a "misrepresentation" and lashed out at Canada's leaders for not pulling it ahead of the baseball championship.

"Because of their major distortion of the truth, and aggressive move, I am increasing the duty on Canada by 10 percent over and above what they are currently paying now," Trump posted.

Following Donald Trump on last Thursday pulled out of trade talks with Canadian officials, the Ontario premier said he would remove the advertisement.

The Province Reaction

Ontario Leader the Premier announced on Friday that he would halt his territory's anti-tariff ad campaign in the US, informing reporters that he made the decision after talks with Prime Minister Carney "to ensure trade negotiations can continue".

He also said it would still run during the weekend, during matches for the World Series, which includes the Toronto Blue Jays versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Economic Context

Canada is the exclusive Group of Seven nation that has not secured a deal with the America since the President commenced attempting to charge high tariffs on goods from primary trading partners.

The America has previously enforced a thirty-five percent levy on each Canadian goods - though most are exempt under an current trade deal. It has also applied sector-specific duties on Canadian products, such as a 50 percent levy on steel and aluminum and 25 percent on vehicles.

In his update, published while he was traveling to Malaysia, the President indicated he was imposing 10 percent to these duties.

Three-quarters of Canada's exports are shipped to the United States, and Ontario is home to the largest share of Canada's automobile manufacturing.

Reagan Commercial Information

The advert, which was sponsored by the Ontario government, quotes former US President Reagan, a Republican and symbol of US conservatism, stating duties "hurt American citizens".

The video includes segments from a 1987 national radio address that addressed foreign trade.

The Foundation, which is charged with preserving the late president's memory, had condemned the advert for using "selective" audio and video and stated it misrepresented Reagan's 1987 address. It also said the Ontario authorities had not obtained permission to use it.

Ongoing Tensions

In his update on social media on Saturday, Donald Trump stated that the commercial should have been removed before.

"Ontario's Commercial was to be pulled IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a DECEPTION," he wrote, while flying to Southeast Asia.

Ford had earlier pledged to run the Reagan commercial in all GOP-controlled area in the America.

The two Donald Trump and Mark Carney will be participating in the ASEAN in Malaysia, but the President advised reporters joining him on the presidential plane that he does not have any "plan" of speaking with his Canadian PM during the journey.

In his update, Donald Trump additionally claimed Canadian officials of seeking to influence an future American high court lawsuit which could end his complete tax system.

The lawsuit, to be reviewed by the American judiciary in the coming weeks, will rule on whether the duties are constitutional.

Baseball Championship Connection

The Reagan ad is not the only way that the region – location of the Toronto Blue Jays – is using the baseball championship as a stage to criticise the President's import taxes.

In a video published on Friday, the Premier and California Governor Gavin Newsom humorously agreed on stakes about which club would succeed in the series.

Both men frequently teased about duties in the recording, with Ford pledging to send Gavin Newsom a container of Canadian syrup if the Los Angeles team triumph.

"The duty might set me back a few extra bucks at the frontier nowadays, but it'll be worth it," he wrote.

In reply, Newsom requested the Premier to resume permitting American-produced beverages to be sold in province beverage outlets, and vowed to provide "our championship-worthy grape drink" if the Jays triumph.

They ended their dialogue together declaring: "To a great baseball championship, and a duty-free alliance between Ontario and CA."
