Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who previously presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on recently to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its records on Epstein.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has said he expects to endorse the measure, after changing his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-related correspondence released by the legislative panel recently included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to influential international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, the former official stated he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the individuals nearest to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
