The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
