The nation's Leaders Caution the former US President Not to Violate a Critical 'Limit' Regarding Demonstration Intervention Statements

The former president has threatened to intervene in the Islamic Republic if its government harm protesters, resulting in admonishments from senior Iranian officials that any involvement from Washington would violate a critical boundary.

A Social Media Post Escalates Diplomatic Strain

Via a social media post on Friday, the former president said that if Iran were to shoot and kill protesters, the America would “intervene on their behalf”. He further stated, “we are prepared to act,” without explaining what that might mean in practice.

Protests Continue into the Sixth Day Amid Financial Turmoil

Protests in Iran are now in their second week, constituting the biggest in several years. The current unrest were catalyzed by an unprecedented decline in the Iranian rial on Sunday, with its value dropping to about 1.4m to the US dollar, intensifying an precarious economic situation.

Multiple individuals have been lost their lives, among them a volunteer for the state-affiliated group. Videos reportedly show security forces armed with shotguns, with the sound of shooting present in the video.

Iranian Officials Issue Strong Responses

In response to Trump’s threat, an official, counselor for the country's highest authority, stated that internal matters were a “red line, not fodder for reckless social media posts”.

“Any foreign interference approaching the country's stability on false pretenses will be severed with a swift consequence,” he posted.

Another senior Iranian official, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, accused the outside actors of having a hand in the unrest, a common refrain by Tehran when addressing protests.

“Washington needs to know that American involvement in this domestic matter will lead to destabilisation of the whole region and the harm to Washington's stakes,” Larijani stated. “The public must know that the former president is the one that started this adventure, and they should be concerned for the security of their soldiers.”

Context of Conflict and Demonstration Scale

Iran has previously warned against US troops deployed in the Middle East in the before, and in recent months it attacked a facility in Qatar after the American attacks on its nuclear facilities.

The ongoing demonstrations have been centered in the capital but have also spread to other cities, such as Isfahan. Shopkeepers have gone on strike in solidarity, and activists have taken over campuses. Though economic conditions are the central grievance, demonstrators have also voiced calls for change and decried what they said was graft and poor governance.

Government Approach Evolves

The nation's leader, Masoud Pezeshkian, initially invited demonstration organizers, adopting a more conciliatory tone than authorities did during the previous unrest, which were put down harshly. The president noted that he had ordered the government to listen to the people's valid concerns.

The fatalities of demonstrators, could, suggest that authorities are adopting a tougher stance as they address the protests as they persist. A communiqué from the powerful military force on recently stated that it would take a harsh line against any external involvement or “internal strife” in the country.

As the government face domestic dissent, it has sought to counter claims from the US that it is rebuilding its nuclear programme. Iran has stated that it is ceased such work domestically and has indicated it is ready for dialogue with the west.
