Burns Dismissed on the Opening Delivery of Ashes series

That initial delivery in a series is much more than merely one ball.

It represents an nerve-wracking three or four seconds of pure drama, where all of pre-contest discussion finally ends.

"To set that atmosphere for the whole contest would prove really remarkable," remarked English paceman Gus Atkinson after questioned regarding this possibility this week.

"I know we've witnessed several memorable first-ball occasions in Ashes matches. The possibility to join that tradition seems cool."

Zak Crawley dedicated his build-up to 2023's Ashes thinking about striking the first ball for four runs - about wanting to "make an impact."

Australian skipper Pat Cummins approached at the pavilion end and the batsman cracked a shot past the covers amid thunderous roars from English fans.

"I've always been an enormous admirer of the first ball of Ashes cricket," Crawley explained.

"I was observing it since growing up and I realized a couple weeks out if should we won the toss there would be an excellent opportunity of facing it."

"I chatted with Harry Brook about this when we played golfing in Scotland - that it could be amazing if I could get that first ball for runs to deliver a statement."

England didn't claimed that contest - and the Australians thrillingly won the opening match on last day - but it proved a hint of the way Stokes' team planned to attack throughout that summer.

The English had won the 2005 Ashes fifteen before yet were comprehensively beaten five-nil. Many argue that series were lost at that very moment.
