Voting Begins in Holland as Surveys Point to Potential Repeat Win for Firebrand Leader Geert Wilders

The polls are open for parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, with current polling data indicating that the far-right leader Geert Wilders and his PVV party could once again emerge victorious, although analysts suggest the party is unlikely of being part of the future coalition.

Polling Trends and Election Dynamics

The PVV, which in the last election achieved a shock top result and established a four-party right-leaning coalition that collapsed within a year, is currently slightly leading in the polls and is forecast to secure between 24 to 28 seats in the 150-seat house of representatives.

However, PVV's popularity has dipped since 2023, when it won 37 seats. Every significant political group have stated they will not entering into a coalition with the PVV leader, who triggered the fall of the outgoing coalition in the summer over a dispute concerning his radical immigration plans.

Key Contenders and Projections

At the end of a election period dominated by issues such as immigration, medical expenses, and the country's severe housing shortage, the centre-left Green Left/Labour party alliance, headed by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is placed a near second, expected to gain between 22 to 26 seats.

Also forecast to do well is the centrist Democrats 66, projected to boost its representation by almost five times to 21-25 seats, while the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDA) is expected to significantly increase its number of MPs to between 18 to 22.

The outgoing cabinet members – comprising the PVV, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and centrist New Social Contract (NSC) – are all projected to lose seats, with several facing heavy declines.

Voting Process and Fragmentation

In the Netherlands' electoral system, securing just less than one percent of the vote earns a party one MP. Among the two dozen political groups contesting the election – including parties for the over-50s, youth parties, for animals, basic income advocates, and sports parties – up to 16 could enter the legislature.

This significant division ensures that no single party is expected to win a majority, and the Netherlands has been governed by coalitions – often including four parties in recent governments – for more than a century.

Government Formation

Wilders has stated that "democracy will be dead" in the Netherlands if the PVV becomes the largest party yet is excluded from power. But, opponents and experts argue that first place does not guarantee government participation and that any coalition with a parliamentary majority is democratically valid.

While the final outcome is uncertain and government negotiations could take several months, analysts indicate that after the most extreme government in recent memory, the future government is expected to be a inclusive alliance headed by either the moderate left or centrist right.

Election Day Details

Voting locations, including those in the miniature city Madurodam in The Hague and the Anne Frank museum in the capital city, began operations at 7.30am (6.30am GMT) and will conclude at 9:00 PM. A usually accurate exit poll is expected soon after the polls close.

After the vote, an informateur will explore potential governing alliances that could command a majority in parliament. Potential partners will then draft a governing pact for the next four years and must undergo a vote of confidence in parliament before taking office.
